Are the feel-good New Orleans Saints for real?
New Orleans is still trying to rebound from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The Saints are certainly trying to do their part for the Crescent City, vaulting out of the gate with a surprising 5-1 record that has the team sitting atop the NFC South standings. Quarterback Drew Brees has made the Saints’ $60 million investment in him this offseason look like money well spent. He’s directed the offense to 354.3 yards and 24.2 points a game. Rookie Reggie Bush has yet to really break out, though his punt return vs. the Buccaneers in Week 5 did propel the Saints to a 24-21 win. New Orleans has been good on the other side of the ball, too. After a woeful performance in 2005, the defense has been solid, ranking in the top half of the league — not bad considering the Saints acquired starting linebackers Mark Simoneau and Scott Shanle in the preseason and lost starting safety Roman Harper to a knee injury.
