A. We are not aware of any guidelines or regulations regarding pupils wearing eye protection for hand tool processes, such as using coping saws. However the decision as to whether eye protection is required should be based upon the individual school’s risk assessment of the particular material being cut and their evaluation of the hazards involved. In addition, there may be Local Authority guidelines that have been issued relating to this. Advice may have been given for example in relation to the cutting of sheet acrylic and the need to warn pupils not to blow away waste material which could get blown into eyes.
