I know some people will say yes, but honestly, most of it is just the upbringing the animal has. I’ve had mutts with cats, and currently have a Chow Chow & 2 cats. Some animals have a “high prey drive” like huskies, or hunting breeds. As long as you’ve trained the dog to “be nice” or “easy”, and it obeys you, you should be ok. The BEST way is to have the cat alredy established in the household, and then bring in a puppy. To the puppy, this cat will be a playmate, that has a wicked left hook! LOL (If your cat has claws, try to make sure it does harm your puppy!) I’ve done it various ways… we had 2 cats when we started fostering Chows. Both were declawed & fixed, so couldn’t harm them very much. (And the Chows are bigger anyway.) They ALL were told to “be nice” and first time meetings were done with the dog on a leash. Our current Chow has seen 6 different cats go thru this household. Of the 2 currently here, 1 cat will play with her & they actually roughouse, whereas the other cat tol

I don’t know specifically why but bigger dogs always get along better with cats. My theory is that because cats are naturally aggressive animals and natural predators they have the common sense not to attack or get on the bad side of an animal much larger then them. Whereas with smaller dogs a cat, especially adult cats know that they can dominate this animal and because of their temperament that’s what they are likely to do. Also smaller dogs have what I like to deem “small dog syndrome” in which they are very curious, sometimes stupid, loud and persistent. In that if they see a cat they will want to play with it or they are vary curious to see if they can smell and dominate this animal especially in a household environment. Usually small dogs contain terrier in them and when there is terrier in a dog they also have a natural instinct to hunt, chase etc. and because a dog is small- a cat will not put up with that. So yeh big dogs and cats get along usually.
