The Farm Census of 2001 reported that there were 359 dairy farms on Prince Edward Island with 14,623 dairy cows.* Of these 359 farms, 314 shipped milk or cream to dairy processing facilities. In 2003, 94.7 million litres of milk was produced, valued at more than 53.5 million dollars, on 270 PEI farms. The average herd size is 50 cows but a dairy herd can range from 20 to 250 animals. Cows are milked for 10 months of the year with the average cow producing 30 litres a day. This equals 9,242 litres of milk per year per cow. Thats an average of 125 glasses of milk per day, every day of the year.
