Nobody seems to be able to confirm this. At Lake Eufaula, AL in 1997 it appeared to be LMBV, but no fish were examined. At Lake Eufaula in 1998, biologists were fairly certain this was LMBV. Lake Eufaula did not have a LMBV fish kill in 1999. There have been no repeat kills in Mississippi. Is there any historical data involving only bass, that suggests this may have occurred in the past? Hansen and Chinchar have studies that suggest the virus has only been here a short period of time. The literature shows no examples prior to 1990. This seems to be a newer introduction that is spreading rapidly. Is it theoretically possible for the virus to be transferred between water bodies by predators or birds?
