Are there factors that predict which DCIS will form subsequent invasive cancer or another DCIS?
Study Design: A nested case-control study within a population-based cohort study Study Eligibility: Women who were aged 40 years or older when diagnosed with DCIS and who were treated by lumpectomy alone Enrollment: Cases were 324 women from the study cohort who had developed subsequent breast tumors (either invasive or more DCIS). Controls were 186 women who did not develop subsequent breast tumors. From a population-based cohort of 1,162 women aged 40 and older who were diagnosed with DCIS and treated by lumpectomy alone, the study investigators conducted a nested case-control study to identify clinical, histopathologic, and molecular characteristics of initial DCIS that are associated with developing subsequent invasive cancer or DCIS. These women were treated in 63 hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area and were recruited from January 1983 to December 1994. Study investigators obtained the original DCIS tissue samples from pathology laboratories. Controls were randomly selected an
