No. The reason you GET a ‘fever blister’ or ‘cold sore’ when you have a temperature or a cold or something similar is because you have the herpes simplex virus in your system already, and having a fever or a virus weakens your immune system enough to allow the herpes infection to surface – all a fever blister is is a nice euphemism for a herpes outbreak on your mouth. 8 out of 10 people have the herpes virus orally, so you are not alone. There is little stigma attached to having it on the mouth because it is so common – it is much more acceptable than having it genitally, so it isn’t something to worry about too much. That said, remember that the herpes virus that causes herpes on your mouth can also cause genital herpes in someone else if you transfer it to someone’s genitals through oral sex – so be very careful about giving oral sex. People often make the mistake of thinking hsv-1 which causes most fever blisters is somehow a ‘different’ form of herpes and cannot infect the genitals
