Are there people breeding hamsters in Australia? Where can I get one?

Sorry- but you wont be able to find a hamster in Australia. There are a large amount of laws when it comes into importing animals into the country-all rodents- like hamsters, gerbils, fancy rats and mice, etc, are excluded. Luckily- rats and mice managed to sneak into the country of their own accord- but we dont have hamsters or gerbils here. There are many animals that we dont have here as a result of these laws. Although you can get Chinchillas and Hedgehogs in New Zealand you cant get them here in Oz for some reason! I recommend searching for a rat! Rats make fantastic pets (much better than hamsters, anyway!) and they are readily avaliable in Melbourne. Check out this website- it has some great advice- and it should list breeders/rescues in your area!
