Are There Standards for Mineral Operations on State Leases, to Ensure they are Conducted in a Safe and Environmentally Responsible Manner?

Yes. The department’s school trust mineral activities, like those on privately-owned lands, are subject to the oversight of State regulatory agencies. These agencies must review and prepare environmental assessments for any contemplated activity pursuant to their statutory authority. If the proposed activity meets regulatory standards, that agency will issue a permit that contains applicable operating, bonding and reclamation requirements. In addition, for operations on school trust lands, our department also must authorize any proposed activity. We may also specify additional operating, bonding or reclamation requirements. Both the regulatory agency and our land management field staff monitor the authorized activities to ensure compliance.
