Are USA Swimming coaches sexually abusing young girls?
(video) ABC News is investigating claims that American swimming coaches are sexually abusing young girls. The cases will be explored tonight on 20/20 which airs between 10:00 and 11:00 p.m. ET. The show will focus on a series of incidents involving girls who state they were sexually abused by coaches associated with USA Swimming. USA Swimming is the organization that governs the U.S. Olympic swim teams and swimming competitions nationwide. USA Swimming executive director Chuck Wielgus told ABC’s Brian Ross that they are aware of a number of sexual abuse complaints and that there have been lawsuits in the past. He states, however, that it is the responsibility of individual swim teams and clubs to conduct background checks on the coaches they hire. Chuck Wielgus also stated that he does not believe that he, as director of USA Swimming needs to apologize to young girls who state they were sexually abused by their coaches.
