Are Vegans considered Hippies?
Being a vegan doesn’t MAKE you anything… other peoples ignorance, prejudices and stereotypes will be projected onto you, and that can be exasperating… but I know a lot of vegans and I don’t think you could call them hippies. In fact if you knew what a hopelessly immature and irresponsible bunch many hippies were you probably wouldn’t make the comparison. I’m a vegan – Im a 21st century industrial vegan… I don’t want to live in a tree house, I like cars and computers, I like to do business and make money and I like the real world more than a dope fuelled fantasy. In my experience vegans (not imagined ones but real life ones) don’t look anything like the stereotypes people talk about. I think the more they use the stereotypes the less real vegans they know.
It’s a lazy stereotype. Anyone who actually lived through the 1960s and 70s (yes, I’m that old) can tell you that vegetarianism wasn’t widespread among hippies, veganism even less so. Trying to find vegetarian food at a hippie festival was usually a dead loss. Vegans (as you can already see from the answers you’ve had so far) are as diverse in their views, attitudes and lifestyles as any other group.
