Aren there sharper lens that are commercially available?
Strictly speaking – yes, Rodenstock digital lenses for example, are much sharper than the Schneider Optics lens we use. However, our lens maintains its sharpness over an image circle of nearly 50cm, whereas the digital lenses can cover much smaller image circle (6-7 cm). If we multiply the resolution of the lens by the size of the image it produces, we realized that our lens obtains much more information that the sharper Rodenstock lens can obtain. That said, if we could find a lens that has the same sharponess of the Rodenstock lens and a large image circle as the Schneider Optics lens, then by using computation methods we can obtain real resolution of 6 GigaPixels – wouldn’t that be nice?
