AROUND SUMMER TIME I HAVE NOTICED THAT ALL THE MALE MALLARDS HAVE DISSAPPEARED. WHERE DID THEY GO?
They didn’t go anywhere. After spring is over ducks start molting. Molting is when old, worn feathers are loosened in their follicles (sockets) by the growth of new intruding feathers, which eventually push them out. These new feathers are drab in color like a female mallards. They start to get their color back around the time of spring.
