As an Exchange administrator, why not just remove the NK2 files and force our personnel to use the GAL?
A – We see no technical reason why you need to use the NK2 file. However, the NK2 files stores a great deal more information than most people realize. Let’s say that there are 500 users in your company. Each NK2 file has an average of 500 names and email addresses in it. That’s a quarter million names and/or email addresses! Sure the internal email addresses are contained in your GAL, but what about the remaining SMTP addresses? In addition, the NK2 file stores public keys and other information that facilitates secure communications with your customers.
