Beginner Piano Lessons – What Are the White Keys Called on a Piano?
When you start playing the piano, learning the names of the keys on the piano is your first activity. Once you have learned them you can go to a specific note with confidence. When you look at the layout of the piano, you will notice that the white keys run continuously from one end to the other. The black keys are grouped in 2 then 3, 2 then 3. The white keys are named after the first 7 letters of the alphabet: A, B, C, D, E, F and G. The very first key on the left hand side of the piano is A. The next key is B, the next is C and so on. Here is a quick tip to help you learn the notes – practice saying the alphabet backwards from G to A! Then play the first 7 notes (A to G) on your piano, saying them as you play them. Now repeat this from G back to A. Practice this until you can say them fast! As you play the notes from A through to G you will notice that the sound rises. What happens after G?
