Check the feed type you’re providing. If you’re using a seed mix, the birds at your feeder are probably tossing out the seeds they don’t like in search of the ones they prefer. This results in lots of seeds on the ground where doves and other animals will feast on them. It’s generally better to separate different seed types in different feeders. Black oil sunflower seeds are the best overall choice, but you can also provide smaller seeds (such as millet) in a platform feeder for the ground-feeding birds. One problem with sunflower seeds is the seed hulls that are discarded on the ground. One solution is to place landscape fabric under the feeder so it’s easier to pick up and dump the hulls. Another suggestion for spilled seeds is to have a larger tray on the feeder. You can attach a tray (such as a round pizza baking sheet) to the bottom of the feeder so there’s a greater catching surface. Be sure to clean the feeder regularly to get rid of old seed hulls.
