The placenta does a pretty good job most of the time on regulating which nutrients will cross over to nourish the baby. Even if the mother WAY overeats then those extra pounds will go to the mom and a minimal amount (if any) will go to the baby. That’s why you sometimes see very heavy women with normal sized babies. There are exceptions though. If the mom has gestational diabetes then their babies are born overweight. The placenta has a very hard time regulating what nutrients the baby gets when mom’s blood sugar is too high much of the time. Starving mothers from third world countries have sick and skinny babies (if they’re alive at all) because her body can’t give the placenta what it doesn’t have. Then there are skinny women who are NOT starving but they sometimes have big babies anyway. My sister had a 10 pound baby and she’s been a little underweight all her life.
