Fire authorities should reimburse the approved cost of purchasing appropriate safety glasses for use on the fireground. (This does not include the cost of special contact lenses.) Whilst the Scheme of Conditions of Service (Grey Book) does not make specific mention of eye tests it may be reasonable to reimburse employees under the following circumstances: • that the tests are for appropriate safety glasses • only if the test results showed that the individual needed the safety glasses • or if a medical examination required the individual to take an eye test The above would apply to all firefighters regardless of their duty system.
