Can a former cancer sufferer donate blood or be a bone marrow donor?

Because it was Leaukemia and you had a bone marrow transplant your local blood bank will not allow you to donate. I recently beat Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (at age 18/19) and was also saved by a stem cell transplant. Unfortunately no blood bank at the moment will accept plasma, blood, or marrow from a transplant recipient. I used my own stem cells for my transplant and I can’t donate either. I know how it feels to want to be someone else’s lifeline. It’s hard to be told that no matter what you’ve been through and no matter what was done to save your life you can’t help save someone else’s. If you really want to help others that are going through this maybe volunteer to talk to other kids about what you’ve gone through to give them that little spark of hope to keep them going. 🙂 be well.
