Can a person who has received the LAIV 2009 H1N1 vaccine test positive on a rapid influenza diagnostic test?
Yes. Both the LAIV 2009 H1N1 vaccine and the LAIV seasonal influenza vaccine can cause a positive result on a rapid influenza diagnostic test. The tests are designed to detect influenza viruses and cannot determine the difference between the LAIV versus wild-type influenza viruses. Positive rapid test results in persons who recently were vaccinated with LAIV (past 7 days), could be caused by the LAIV or wild-type influenza.
