Excessive and deep cracks in the ribs of a serpentine if one sign of failure. Minor cracks are generally not a problem. A serpentine belt also wears out and the ribs wear away. This is hard to spot without a special gauge. Worn belts may look fine, but can slip and cause damage to belt-driven components.
