Yes they can, if the work that they are offering falls within the Exceptions Order of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. There are many areas of work to which this applies; in particular, any work which involves regular, frequent or intensive contact with children or vulnerable adults has to be subject to a criminal records check.
