Can anyone be considered as a donor if they smoke or drink alcohol?
All potential candidates interested in donating to their family members should stop drinking. Previous alcohol intake has to be discussed with the examining physician. It will not preclude from donating, but the donor may have to undergo Liver biopsy to make sure there is no liver damage. Socially acceptable intake can be resumed two to three months after operation. We urge the donors to stop smoking for a period of at least one to two months prior to surgery as they have a higher risk of post-operative pulmonary complications.
