This was selected as Best Answer Let’s go simple: IPsec: networked bassed needs network rules to be secured (firewalling) SSL: Application level (some will say it is also network based, but in fact it is SSL tunneling over an application layer). Decision criteria: Go with SSL if you only need to provide access to specific applications Go with IPsec if you need to give access to specific protocol/hosts Remember… SSL is more than often bound to 128bit encryption, sometimes 256 and you can’t really specify the rate at which keys are renogeciated as in the case of IPSEC where you can specify IKE and IPSEC key renegociation rates to maximise security.
