I definitely think you can use your idea and experience to write an excellent college entrance essay. I believe that college administrators are looking for something unique, something that tells them about you, and something that gives them some insight into your life, goals, dreams, etc. How you overcame a hardship in your life is often a good starting point. If I were you, I would perhaps open the essay by describing a scene from your life (maybe something difficult you went through with your alcoholic father) and then go on to describe more about your life, how you dealt with this situation and other like it, why you handled situations the way you did, etc. Be sure to explain how this helped develop your character and your goals for the future. Have several people (including teachers) read it for proofreading and critique. Be sure to listen to and thoughtfully consider any comments and criticism, especially since it’s coming from people who are trying to help you. Good luck with you
