Generally most police reports are public record and can be read and obtained by going to your local police departments records division. There are however exceptions to this. Many juvenile crime matters are not a matter of public record and can not be obtained by the general public. In addition many times a pending murder investigations records are also not public as releasing the reports can jeopardize pending cases. You may only be able to obtain the initial reports obtained by the first responders but not the follow up investigative reports. It would depend on time frames and the circumstances regarding the investigation.
