Can anyone recommend good educational books for children to read over half-term?

First, don’t worry about the ‘educational value’. The habit of reading is worthwhile developing in and of itself. Just make sure that the reading level is a little higher than they can comfortably manage. And don’t scoff at comic books – I got my son who hated reading at age 6 to devour comics; he now reads just about anything in print (including e-books). Try, though, to push them towards subjects they are interested in – my son’s were science and computing, so he had lots of SF/Fantasy comics, and a fair number of books on mathematics (ways of doing arithmetic that would not be taught in schools, games that prompted him to think outside the norm, and stories of people who developed computers).
