Can audits performed by the Environmental Performance Assessment System (EPAS) be used to meet ISO 14001 requirements?
EPAS can help installations meet the requirements of ISO 14001 by providing a place to document internal and external audit findings and providing the necessary protocols to effectively evaluate an installation’s EMS for conformance to the ISO 14001 standard. Chapter 7 of the Active Army Supplement to the U.S. Team Guide provides a detailed description of what internal and external auditors should be looking for when performing EMS audits. The Army EMS Self-Declaration Protocol requires that all Army EMS audits be documented using the EPAS software. External EPAS audits do not substitute for the internal auditing requirements of the ISO 14001 standard. External audits performed during an EPAS visit can help identify deficiencies in your EMS. External EPAS audits are not considered third-party registration audits.
