Boniva belongs to a group of medications called bisphosphonates and works by binding to certain cells in bones and slows down the rate at which they break down. The prescribing information on Boniva lists the following as common side effects of the medication: back pain, indigestion or heartburn, arm or leg pain, stomach upset or pain, diarrhea, headache, weakness, muscle pain, and insomnia. If you are experiencing severe heartburn or heartburn that does not go away, severe muscle pain, jaw or tooth problems you should report this to your physician.
