Can cherry juice cure insomnia?

Insomnia can be caused by stress. Pharmaceutical sleep aids can help, but many people are weary to become to dependent on them. The natural alternatives to pharmaceutical medications are valerian and melatonin, and now scientists have found that tart cherry juice can help as well.

Tart cherry juice reduces the inflammation and oxidative stress caused by exercise in healthy adults which creates improvements in their sleep. People either respond to the melanin in the cherries or the fact that cherries reduce inflammation and make it easier to sleep.

In the study, insomniacs who drank cherry juice woke up less frequently than those who did not–but cherry juice did not minimize the amount of time it took these people to fall asleep. This concludes that cherry juice works better than valerian and at least as well as melatonin–but not as much as cognitive modification therapies.
