Can children grow out of lactose intolerance?
Question answered by Dr Trish MacNair It is possible for children to grow out of lactose intolerance but most children who are intolerant to lactose are intolerant for life. Children grow out of their intolerance if it is a result of an acute illness, in which case the individual will recover lactase levels after a few months. Lactose intolerance can be managed through the diet by substituting lactose free products, such as Lactofree. Speak to your doctor as it may be that they can refer you to a paediatrician who specialises in allergies and intolerances.
