Can Chocolate Limit Calcium Absorption?
Caffeine consumption accelerates the rate at which calcium is excreted in the urine. The loss of calcium leads to a loss of bone density. Bone that lacks a healthy bone density is prone to break. Bone that lacks a healthy bone density can take-on an unnatural shape. A patient with osteoporosis has a bone density that falls short of the normal bone density. Recently two American doctors were curious to learn whether or not caffeine consumption by younger women can lead to osteoporosis. Dr. A.J. Cohlisk and Dr. D.A. Galuska of Emory Univeristy in Georgia studied 177 female students at a Midwestern university. The results of their study have been posted at www.cholcolate.org/calcium.html . The doctors from Emory had their study subjects (ages 19-26) write down each drink, food or drug containing caffeine that they ate over the course of a year.
