There are rules against fraternization. However, I don’t believe the intent of the rules is to prevent people from dating or marrying. I believe it’s to prevent the senior influencing the duty and assignments of the junior. I was an E-5 in the Navy. I dated an O-2. We made no secret of our relationship. She even visited me at the Pentagon. I accompanied her to officer parties. I often met officers in the Pentagon who I had met at the parties. The officers with whom I stood duty were boot Ensigns (O-1), and worried what they would do if my girlfriend tried to spring me early. I told them she would never do that, but if she did, they should ask her to clear it with the Admiral first. I cannot believe that the watch officers know about our relationship and the Admiral didn’t But she was not in my chain of command.
