Gastroenterologists not only diagnose and perform surveillance of disorders involving the esophagus, stomach and first part of the small intestine, but can also perform polypectomy (removal of polyps), obtain biopsy specimens, perform dilation (stretching narrowed areas), and perform hemostasis (stop bleeding) in the upper GI tract. They can also evaluate, treat and biopsy tumors.
