Can gory pictorial warnings on cigarette packs deter smokers?
Mumbai: Opinion is mixed, some feel that images will have an edge over written advisory. According to me, putting menacing pictorial images will make no difference. Many people don’t buy cigarette packs, and they tend to buy single cigarettes at a time. So I have my doubts whether they will actually see the packets. And secondly if the warning text didn’t make any difference to them, I don’t think images will either. –Gaurav Gupta I’m not sure whether it would make much of a difference. As we do know that images tend to stay in our mind for a longer period of time than text or written words. So it would have an impact, but very slowly a change would be observed; it just won’t happen overnight. –Kim Parmar Smoking is injurious to health and everyone is aware of it. But then you still have people who smoke even knowing the repercussions. A mere image will not make them quit smoking. They may take a look at the images and ponder, but they will still go ahead and buy cigarettes. –Subhod
