Can Harvard Pilgrim Health Care CEO Charlie Baker defeat Gov. Patrick in 2010?

It’s hard to read Baker’s recent strong criticism of Gov. Patrick without thinking that Baker is seriously considering a challenge to Patrick three years from now. Since the Massachusetts GOP bench is undeniably weak, Baker won’t have much competition if he runs for the Republican nomination; on paper, the only other person who’d likely be a contender, and not necessarily a strong one at that, is failed 2006 nominee Kerry Healey. Baker would bring a great deal to the table as a contender, but Patrick would have to be severely weakened politically in order for Baker to topple him. In fact, no matter how compelling a case Baker could make for a changing of the gubernatorial guard, his success in the 2010 race would entirely depend on whether the electorate has lost faith in Patrick. Patrick’s missteps have become legendary, but he hasn’t made enough mistakes yet to irreversibly damage his chances for re-election three years hence. In order for him to lose, he’d have to be so incompetent
