When MG went to the rubber-bumper design the ride-height was raised in order to comply with bumper height regulations. You can convert the car to chrome bumpers while still retaining the stock rubber bumper ride height, this is no problem. The benefit is of course mostly cosmetic – the cleaner looks of the chrome bumpers. Bringing the ride height down to the levels associated with the earlier chrome bumper cars is a big task – it requires front crossmember modifications for example – but it does give both a visual and a performance improvement. I suppose which you do first – bumpers or suspension depends on your goals and budget. Personally if it were me, I’d rather be on the lookout for a decent chrome bumper car so I wouldn’t have to bother with all the mods.
