When your at the professional level you should be receiving a firm written offer from the new employer. Do not give notice until you have that in hand and the offer is acceptable to you. As for giving notice, you can do that at anytime. Sometimes a company will let you go upon giving notice. It depends on who you work for, however if you deal with confidential material you can expect to be let go upon notice. I today’s world people change jobs all the time. You do owe a full two week notice. No sense in burning a bridge.
