Training needed for appropriate treatment of oromyofunctional disorders has been outlined by the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM) in conjunction with the American Speech/Language and Hearing Association (ASHA). Skills required for an orofacial myologist include: understanding the following dentofacial patterns and physiology pertinent to orofacial myology; causative factors; basic orthodontic concepts; interrelationship between speech and orofacial myofunctional disorders; competence in assessment; developing an appropriate, individual criterion based treatment plan; andappropriate documentation. Phyllis Magelky has participated in over 30 hours of training in orofacial myofunctional disorders and completed a comprehensive examination developed by the IAOM.
