There are actually a few different types of inquiries that can appear on your credit report, so here’s what you need to know: If you make a general inquiry just to check your score and/or credit, it will appear on your report but does not affect your score. This is known as a “soft” inquiry. If one of your creditors or a third party creditor makes an inquiry to either monitor your credit status or to pre-approve you for a credit offer without your consent, this is also a “soft” inquiry and doesn’t affect your score. If you, on the other hand, actively apply for credit, this is known as a “hard” inquiry and is not really a problem unless you do it more often than every six months or so. If this is the case, in the eyes of the credit scoring system, you look a little desperate and your score will definitely suffer. You should know though that the scoring system allows you to shop for car loans or mortgages and will count multiple inquiries as only a single inquiry as long as they are all
