MRSA outbreaks have occurred from food through contamination by infected food handlers, but this is very uncommon, and this risk can be prevented by proper pasteurization and food handling. To date, there have been no confirmed cases of food-borne MRSA infection from animals. The American Veterinary Medical Association is coordinating with the American Medical Association (AMA), other veterinary associations, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), US Department of Agriculture (USDA), and other national and international partners to obtain accurate information and will provide additional information to health professionals and the public as it becomes available.
