Can I put diesel engine oil in a gas engine car?
Johneye is right the catalyst converter can be damaged by the oil additives. The most recent federally mandated oil changes where due to catalyst life. Otherwise the oil would be fine for a gas engine assuming it has the correct viscosity. Many people believe diesel oils are better for their older engines, mainly due to the zinc as it is the main lubricant for metal on metal wear such as flat tappet camshafts.
