Can I use a MiniDisc recorder to recording lip sync sound?

A. Yes, in some cases. As is the case with DAT recorders a MiniDisc incorporates a crystal-derived servo system to maintain the precise rotational speed of the spinning disc. The constant speed disc drive will allow you to record and play back digital audio at a precise real-time speed (i.e. 10.0 minutes recorded will play back as 10.0 minutes over and over). As with the low cost consumer DAT recorders, the MiniDisc recorders do not accept external sync references. They cannot be slaved to some other external master source such as a videocassette recorder, for instance (see “…recording sound for…video”). If the MiniDisc recorder will be used only for transferring the field audio cassettes to magnetic film and if the mag film recorder (see “What is a magnetic film recorder”) is also referenced to crystal, there is usually no problem. However, if you are having your film transferred to video on a Rank scanner, the film will be transfered at 23.976fps (not 24fps). Your MiniDisc source
