It is not a good idea to use a traditional grill on a patio if you have an apartment over head, especially is there is a porch over head. This can cause a fire hazard and most apartment complexes ban them. However, you could invest in a portable grill. Portable grills are small, compact, and east to maintain. They also do not consititue a fire hazard like full size grills. They are available in charcoal, electric, and gas and in a variety of styles so I am sure that you could find something perfect for your patio.

There are many variables involved in outdoor grill use on apartment decks and patios. There is no one direct answer to this question. Please call the Fire Department Administrative Office at (630) 833-5350 Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. for more information. Please note that your landlord may also have guidelines for grill usage on their property.
