Yes, in fact, using a virtual machine is preferred. You can obtain a trial version of VMware Workstation from http://www.vmware.com or Microsoft Virtual PC from http://www.microsoft.com/virtualpc/. How Should My Laptop Be Configured? If you bring a laptop, it should have Windows Server 2003 or higher installed and the latest Service Pack applied (you can obtain an evaluation copy from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/downloads/trialsoftware/). Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista are insufficient to follow all the exercises in the course. Also, if you have a choice, install Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition. Using the R2 release is not required, but feel free to install it. Install the “Support Tools” from the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM as well (CD-ROM:SupportToolsSupTools.msi). Bring that CD with you.
