Can I walk or sit in the bathtub after an intrathecal or epidural for labor pain?
Whether you are allowed to walk depends on many factors, and depends on how you and your baby are doing. You may be allowed to walk or sit in the bathtub after the initial numbness of an intrathecal wears off and your obstetric care provider approves. In the near future, we expect to allow some patients walk with epidurals as well. We do not give intrathecals or epidurals for water births. For more information regarding pain relief for labor visit the American Society of Anesthesiologists website: Please note that this website discusses mostly epidurals and combination intrathecal plus epidurals (called combined spinal epidural or CSE).
