It’s hard to be optimistic, at least for the short term. Joining a new team and trying to work with a new crew is difficult under any circumstances. And Richard Childress Racing’s third team, added in 2001, has never really been competitive. Burton, who just left Roush Racing’s No. 99 team, says he’s obviously unfamiliar with RCR’s equipment and suspension setups but is glad to be starting at Michigan, a track where he has been fairly good. “Michigan is actually one of my favorite tracks,” Burton says. “I really enjoy going there. I think it’s a great track to start another relationship and start building on something because it’s a track that is very smooth, not a bunch of bumps but does have a bunch of different grooves to run.
