Can marijuana (cannabis) cause Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is one of the more serious mental health disorders and may cause problems over many years. People who smoke in their teenage years may be at increased risk of developing schizophrenia compared to non-cannabis users, however, it is not known or established whether there is a direct link between these two – that smoking dope as a teenager, where you have no predisposition to schizophrenia, will cause this illness. More likely that it may trigger an episode for people who are alreday likely to develop schizophrenia at some point in their life. ALSO Some people report that smoking dope if they have a mental health disorder, relieves their symptoms – it actually makes their symptoms worse. If a person smokes cannabis when they already suffer from schizophrenia their symptoms may become more severe and difficult to manage It may lower their chances of recovery from a psychotic episode.
