Can my church ordain an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender person as an elder or deacon?
Yes. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) is quite explicit that it will not discriminate against any “category” of people, including categories based on sexual orientation or gender. (However, please also read the next question below, where we discuss how the PCUSA distinguishes between “orientation” and “practice”.) An “Authoritative Interpretation” of the Constitution was issued by the General Assembly on this issue in 1998.
