Can nanotech be used as a weapon?
Nanotech is the last killer app. As a weapon, it will make hydrogen bombs obsolete. Infinitely programmable for varying scenarios, nanites can be instructed to seek out and disassemble a single human being (identified by his DNA), or an army of 200 million; to disassemble every nuclear weapon on earth or build five billion more in a single night. In a recent speech to the Foresight Institute (established to help the world prepare for the advent of nanotechnology), Admiral David E. Jeremiah, former Vice-Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff (the second highest-ranking military man in the nation), had this to say: “Molecular manufacturing [another term for nanotechnology] has even greater potential than nuclear weapons to change the balance of power.
